The disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected female mosquito of the genus Anopheles, which is passed into the bloodstream where it reproduces. If another mosquito bites that person, the parasite infects that insect and the cycle continues.
When traveling to regions where there are cases of malaria:
- Ask your doctor about medications that protect you. Chemoprophylaxis is necessary before, during and after the return from geographical areas with high incidence of malaria.
- Use insect repellents.
- Cover up, avoid exposing the skin to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.
- Sleep under a mosquito net to protect you from bites. This simple measure is highly recommended.
