Low blood pressure, or hypotension, occurs when blood pressure is much lower than usual during and after each heartbeat, which means that the heart, brain and other parts of the body do not receive enough blood.
Hypotension in a healthy person is not a problem and usually does not require treatment.
Orthostatic hypotension is caused by a sudden change in body position, usually when shifting from lying down to standing. It usually lasts only a few seconds or minutes.
When you have symptoms of a drop in blood pressure, you should sit or lie down immediately. Raise your feet above heart level.
