Bulimia nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is the voracious appetite for high-calorie foods followed by a conduct that tends to vomiting to prevent weight gain.

Risk factors are abnormalities in the eating pattern, statements of guilt, fatigue and significant weight fluctuations . If severe, the disease can be detected by the appearance of calluses on the knuckles (Russell’s sign) caused by self-induced vomiting.

Prevention. Healthy habits with a complete and balanced diet along with the support of family and friends.

It is recommended that the patient’s family be present at meals and that he or she is monitored.

Treatment. Family support is crucial because it improves chances for healing and the prognosis of the disease.
