Diarrhoea is a process, not always of infectious origin, that is mild in most cases and common to different intestinal and systemic diseases. It affects people of all ages and genders. It can be acute or chronic, depending on how long it lasts. The loss of fluids through diarrhoea can cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and other disturbances.
Symptoms. Diarrhoea may be associated with abdominal and rectal pain, blood, mucus or be accompanied by fever, which can become dangerous or signal a more serious problem. You should talk to your doctor if you have severe diarrhoea for more than three days or if it is accompanied by any of what is mentioned above.
It is recommended that you see a doctor if your child has diarrhoea, as this age group is more prone to dehydration and other complications.
