Diphtheria is a highly contagious and deadly infection caused by bacteria. The infection most commonly affects the mucus membranes associated with the breathing system (the tonsils, throat, and nose) and can also infect the skin.
Risk factors. Those who have not been immunised and have not had a booster dose in the past ten years, those living in unsanitary conditions, people with a weakened immune system and poor nutrition.
Prevention. The infection spreads from person to person through direct contact with respiratory tract droplets that remain suspended in the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
