Glaucoma

Glaucoma encompasses the group of diseases that can damage the eye's optic nerve.

Risk factors. A very thin cornea, elevated intraocular pressure and altered genetics may increase the risk factor for glaucoma. A complete eye exam checking visual acuity, doing a visual field test, taking the intraocular pressure and pupil dilation can help detect if you have glaucoma.

Anti-glaucoma drops (lower intraocular pressure) for the eyes cut about half the risk of developing glaucoma.

 

Once it is established, there is no cure and vision loss can occur. People with glaucoma slowly lose their peripheral vision (side). It is as if they were looking through a tunnel. Over time, the central vision (to the front) can also decrease until it is completely lost.

Treatment. Includes medicines, laser and conventional surgery. Early diagnosis and prevention with check-ups are important is if you have a family member affected by it.
