Hepatitis

Hepatitis is an inflammatory disease of the liver tissue.

There are multiple causes, from drugs, to microorganisms like viruses (HCV, HBV, CMV), toxins such as alcohol, to autoimmune diseases where the body produces antibodies against the liver.

The most common symptoms are fatigue, abdominal pain, dark urine (choluria), jaundice (yellow skin and conjunctivae), decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting and/or fever.

Blood tests are recommended to determine liver function and in some cases a liver biopsy may be necessary to determine to what degree it is affecting the body, as well as serology for the most common viruses.

Treatment. Hepatitis can be cured within six months when it is acute and self-limiting, or it can become chronic and lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. Some hepatitis can be prevented through vaccination (A and B).
