Hyperthyroidism: Occurs when there is too much thyroid hormone in the body because the thyroid gland is overactive. If you have an excess of thyroid hormones, you may feel nervous and hot, irritable, have palpitations, hand tremors, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, fine and brittle hair, and muscular weakness, especially on the arms and thighs. You can lose weight despite a good appetite and, in the case of women, the menstrual flow may be lighter and delays in menstrual periods may occur.
Hypothyroidism: Occurs when the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone to keep the body functioning normally and bodily processes start functioning more slowly. You may notice that you feel colder and more easily fatigued, your skin becomes dry, you have a tendency to forget things and to be depressed.
