Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is also commonly called a "large or enlarged prostate." It causes men to have problems urinating (e.g., going to the bathroom more often or urgently). It is not cancer and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.
It is a very common disease in men, and although it is believed to start at the age of 30, it does not usually manifest itself before the age of 40. At the age of 50 approximately, over 50% of men have some degree of BPH and from 80 years and on, up to 90% may have any of the symptoms.
