Low back pain or lumbago is characterised by pain in the lower back (lumbar region).
Symptoms. It may be accompanied by stiffness, decreased movement of the lumbar region and difficulty being upright. If in addition the pain extends to below one knee or both, it is called sciatica. It is only essential to consult your doctor if, in addition to back pain, you have a fever, sudden weakness in one leg or incontinence.
Causes. Sustained efforts, one-off overstraining and postures unsuitable for maintaining for an extended period of time.
Treatment. Most of the symptoms of low back pain improve quickly with measures such as applying ice, mild painkillers, physiotherapy and appropriate exercises.
