The most common cause of male sterility is a varicocele. Varicocele is enlarged veins of the venous plexus of the testis in one or both sides. The veins heat the testicle and may reduce sperm production in both testicles.
Other causes of male infertility include:
- An obstruction in the male reproductive tract.
- Certain medications.
- Low sperm count.
- Sperm that are abnormally shaped or do not move properly.
- An undescended testicle.
- Infections.
- A problem that the doctor has not detected.
Other factors that may affect fertility include smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs, stress, obesity, and age (fertility gradually decreases in men over age 35).
Infertility is a term that doctors use when a man has difficulties getting a woman pregnant after trying for at least one year. Male infertility can be caused by physical problems, hormonal, lifestyle, or environmental factors.
About a third of the time, the problem has to do with the man. In another third, it has to do with the woman. Sometimes no cause can be found.
If you suspect that you are infertile, consult your doctor. There are tests that can determine if you have an infertility problem. When it is possible to find the cause, treatments include drugs, surgery, or assisted reproductive technologies. Fortunately, two-thirds of couples treated for infertility can have babies.
