Malnutrition

Malnutrition is defined as an imbalance between nutrient supply and the demands of growth, maintenance and specific activities of the body.

Risk factors. There are two groups especially vulnerable to malnutrition: children and the elderly.

Symptoms. Symptoms vary according to what causes malnutrition, but in children it is usually manifested as fatigue, dizziness, weight loss and growth retardation.

Treatment. When a person cannot eat enough nutrients to meet his needs, the body begins to waste away: first fat and then muscle loss. There is no food that contains all the nutrients needed. Therefore, we must ensure food is varied and eaten in a moderate and balanced manner.

Children are more vulnerable to malnutrition. Childhood is a period of physical and intellectual development that requires large energy consumption and thus a healthy and balanced diet. Their relative nutrient requirements are higher, especially during the age of fast growth from 6 months to 2 years.

The elderly expend less energy than young people or adults, but they need to eat all foods, albeit in lesser amounts. It is very important that the diet is balanced, varied and adapted their personal characteristics.
