Mammogram

A mammogram or mastography is the diagnostic examination through X-ray of the breast with a device specially adapted to see the internal structures of the breast as clearly as possible.

A mammogram gives "false negative" (no cancer when it exists) in some cases, especially in premenopausal women.

When the mammogram detects a suspicious lesion that could be cancer, it is classified within a category BI-RADS. Stage I and II are benign, III is undetermined but probably benign, while in Stages IV and V the odds that the lesions are malignant increase. Many times, a mammogram discovers malignant lesions that are not detectable via other types of exploration.
