Metabolic syndrome or “syndrome X” is the combination of five conditions that affect the body’s metabolic functions and puts the person at risk of developing a cardiac or cerebrovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.
Risk factors are abdominal obesity (excess fat around the waist), high blood pressure, increased blood sugar, elevated blood levels of triglycerides and low blood levels of HDL (good cholesterol).
Older people are at greater risk of suffering metabolic syndrome, which may increase the risk of several serious chronic diseases.
Treatment. It is recommended to maintain a healthy weight, not smoking, controlling blood pressure and increasing HDL levels.
