Osteoarthritis causes pain and stiffness in the joints, usually without inflammation. It can occur in any joint, but it usually affects the hands, knees, hips and spine.
Causes. The disease degrades joint cartilage. Cartilage is the tissue that covers the ends of bones in a joint. Healthy cartilage absorbs shocks movements, but when it wears away the bones rub together. Over time, this friction permanently damages the joint.
Risk factors. After 55 years of age, it is more common in women, but almost everyone has some symptoms at 70 years of age.
Treatments. Moderate exercise that is specific to the affected area. For painful cases analgesics and/or anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed. In very advanced cases, it is necessary to implant a prosthesis.
