Parkinson's disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system whose main symptoms are resting tremors (in the hands, arms, legs and jaw or head), rigidity (stiffness of the limbs and trunk), slow movements and postural instability (impaired balance).
Risk factors. It affects about 50% more men than women and is more prevalent in developed countries. Other studies have found increased risk in people living in rural areas.
Treatment. We have effective treatments for the symptoms, but we still have no cure for the disease.
