Parasites are living beings that inhabit another body (the "host"), for food and a place to live.
Risk factors. Common pets such as dogs, cats, birds or reptiles can carry parasites that can affect humans to a lesser or greater extent. Avoid touching waste products with your hands (urine or stool) and if you do, wash your hands thoroughly. Also avoid oral contact with your pet, such as sharing food or kissing it on the mouth.
Be especially careful with children under 5, preventing them from having direct contact with unfamiliar animals (farm animals, reptiles, ducks, etc. ...) or playing in sandboxes where animals have been previously.
