Poor oral hygiene can allow the food that remains mouth to accumulate and produce acids that destroy enamel. The acid, together with bacteria, food debris and saliva create, a sticky substance called plaque that adheres to the teeth and creates cavities. This decay grows slowly and damages the nerves of the teeth, destroying the inside of them until they deteriorate and eventually break down.
Eating often and between meals means that this happens throughout the day. Thoroughly brushing and cleaning between teeth after every meal is the best way to combat this.
One way to prevent tooth decay and periodontal disease (gum) is achieved with a balanced diet and reducing the number of snacks between meals. If you need to snack, choose nutritious foods such as raw vegetables, yogurt, cheese or a piece of fruit.
