Psychotic disorders are serious mental disorders that cause abnormal perceptions of reality.
Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs, certain medications), brain tumours and stroke, and some diseases can cause psychotic episodes.
Symptoms. Delusions and hallucinations, disordered thinking, mental confusion, severe and sudden behavioural changes, isolation and the cessation of communication with others, the feeling of being watched or persecuted, the feeling that that others pose a risk, talking to oneself, assuming an interlocutor, that they hear us talking, experiencing visions.
Treatment. Antipsychotic drugs are often used in addition to various psychological and psychosocial support and treatment of the underlying disease.
