Abundant fluid intake is recommended, except for milk and tea, which are rich in calcium and oxalates and can be stone formers. You must drink at least 2 litres of fluids per day and avoid protein, sodium and calcium.
When an infection occurs with renal colic - fever - you should go to an emergency room.
If there is no infection, treatment is analgesia and hydration:
- Oral hydration is recommended, and if that’s not possible, intravenous hydration, to favour the expulsion of the stone.
- The application of dry heat and sitz baths with hot water relieves pain.
- Antibiotics are used only in case of infection.
Currently we have minimally invasive technology that allows any stone that does not respond to medical treatment to be extracted.
