Aside from taking the medication prescribed by your doctor, you should:
- Get plenty of rest as this will help the body fight infection.
- Drink plenty of fluids to maintain hydration and to thin the mucus inside the lungs. It is advisable to drink plenty of water, hot tea and broth.
- Stop smoking and avoid being around people who smoke; this can worsen symptoms and increase the risk of relapse and other lung problems.
- Avoid places where the air is not pure (near lit fireplaces).
- Do not leave your home until the symptoms are gone. The doctor will tell you when you can return to work or school.
- Use a cool mist humidifier or bathe in warm water to help remove secretions from the lungs and make breathing easier.
