Self-medication

Self-medication without medical or pharmaceutical supervision has health risks:

  • There may be side effects, adverse reactions and poisoning cases.
  • Using the drug in cases that are not suitable can cause it to lose its effect. For example, you can take antibiotics to treat viral processes, versus those that are not effective.
  • Dependence or addiction.
  • Hide severe clinical processes, thereby delaying diagnosis and treatment possible.
  • Interactions with other drugs the person is taking or foods he is eating. There may be an increase or decrease the drug’s effect.
  • Resistance to antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics causes microorganisms to develop defence mechanisms against these drugs and thus they are no longer effective. Antibiotics must never be taken without the supervision of a physician.
