Sinusitis is an inflammatory-infectious process that affects paranasal sinuses.
It can be sub-classified into acute sinusitis (less than 8 weeks in duration) or chronic sinusitis (over 8 weeks in duration).
The causes can be viral or bacterial; the least common is a fungal infection. It is characterised by facial pain of gravitational nature, nasal obstruction, runny nose, hyposmia (partial reduction in the ability to perceive odours) and general malaise.
Treatment. Involves treatment with antibiotics directed to the germ responsible, nasal vasoconstrictors and topical corticosteroids.
