Gout is typically manifested as an acute inflammation of the big toe (these attacks are called podagra), but any joint can swell during an episode of gout, such as a knee, elbow, wrist or ankles, or any joint of the fingers, because the crystals are deposited in any joint.
A person is more likely to get gout if:
- He is male.
- Has a family history of gout.
- Consumes alcohol.
