The intrauterine device, or IUD, owes its name to the fact that it is placed inside the uterus.
This is a small plastic object in a "T" shape which can be coated with metal (copper or silver) or it can be a device that releases hormones (progestin) with a thread at the end for control.
There are different types. The gynaecologist will advise you regarding which one is the most appropriate. It works by preventing the egg from implanting in the uterus. In addition, copper and progestin downgrades the sperm’s ability to fertilise. It also modifies the cervical mucus making it impenetrable. It usually lasts for three to five years, depending on the model.
It is very effective, however, it is not recommended for young girls as a birth control method because it requires more gynaecological controls, especially vaginal discharge.
