A cold sore is caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. Early treatment with medicines that fight the virus can help reduce the intensity and duration of the episode. These drugs can also help prevent persistent pain. There is no specific vaccine against herpes simplex virus.

There is no guarantee for a cure for herpes. However, there are medications that can shorten the duration of lesions and decrease the pain they cause.
