Cataracts are treated with surgery. During operation, the eye surgeon removes the lens that has become opaque through ultrasounds (phacoemulsification) and, in most cases, replaces it with a transparent lens which remains fixed inside the eye (intraocular lens) within the pouch that holds the lens. This operation is highly successful in restoring vision.
