Varicose veins

Varicose veins are superficial, dilated veins that swell and protrude from the surface of the skin. They can be a purple or dark blue in colour.

Risk factors affect one in every two people over 50 years of age. They are more common among women than men.

Prevention. Exercise, weight loss, elevation of the legs when resting and not crossing them when sitting can help prevent worsening of varicose veins. Wear loose clothing and avoid standing for long periods.

It is recommended to exercise often and maintain a healthy and balanced diet.

Treatment. Various medications help alleviate the disease. If the veins are painful or you dislike their appearance, your doctor may recommend procedures to remove them, which can be both medical and surgical. The most effective medical treatment is the use of elastic graduated compression stockings or socks. Surgical treatments include, Stripping, the CHIVA technique, radiofrequency, laser and foam sclerosis. These techniques consist of removing the affected veins and disconnecting them either physically or removing them by applying heat or substances causing them to disappear.
