Cirrhosis of the liver

Cirrhosis of the liver is a type of fibrosis that affects the liver tissue and causes it to degenerate due to various chronic diseases.

Risk factors include, chronic alcoholism, Hepatitis B, C and D; as well as those involving the production or flow of bile from the liver, diabetes and dyslipidaemia. There are other causes that produce early cirrhosis in children and adolescents, such as biliary atresia and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency.

Prevention. Avoid drinking alcohol. Consume salt in moderation, do not take drugs or toxic substances without a prescription, do not have high-risk sexual relations, and do not share needles or syringes with others.

Treatment. In general, liver damage from cirrhosis is irreversible, but you can prevent complications and keep it from worsening by abstaining from alcohol and eating a healthy diet. A liver transplant is a last resort.

Cirrhosis can lead to:

  • Coagulopathies (thrombocytopenia, hypofibrinolysis or hyperfibrinolysis).
  • Portal hypertension (ascites, telangiectasia, oesophageal varices, etc.).
  • Hepatic encephalopathy.
  • Renal failure (hepatorenal syndrome).
  • About 5% of people develop liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma).
