Essential thrombocythemia is caused when platelets grow out of control. Platelets are circulating particles responsible for stopping bleeding. When platelets do not work well, this can cause bleeding (haemorrhage) or blood clots (thrombosis).
As this is an disturbance of the stem cell, it does not just affect platelets; red and white blood cells may be involved. This disease, if left untreated, slowly gets worse over time.
