Sleep disorders disrupt the progression of the cycle sleep.
Symptoms:
- Insomnia: difficulty falling or staying asleep.
- Hypersomnia: drowsiness throughout the day.
- Apnoea: nocturnal breathing pauses.
- Enuresis: bedwetting during sleep.
- Night terrors, nightmares: waking up abruptly.
- Sleepwalking: Walking or doing another activity while sleeping.
What can cause insomnia?
- Anxiety disorders and depression.
- Inadequate sleep hygiene (taking naps, caffeine and/or alcohol consumption, intense physical activity before bedtime, irregular times for going to bed and getting up).
- Chronic diseases associated with pain or shortness of breath (rheumatic diseases, fibromyalgia, COPD, asthma, heart failure, gastroesophageal reflux, gastric/duodenal ulcer).
- Medications (stimulants, antidepressants, suppression of sedatives or hypnotics).
- Irregular sleep pattern, rotating work schedules.
